Rare Double Arched Solar Flare

Although I haven't gotten back to deep sky yet (soon), I thought I would share this unusual capture of the sun with you. After a series of flares (including at least four X-Class flares) all last week, the sun gave up this beautiful looping double-arch flare from Sunspot 12673 before passing on to t...

Eclipse Composite (too late for the contest)

Composite 2_Annotated_web4.jpg Doug and All, It has been along time since I posted at this forum mainly because I haven't done any astro imaging for almost 2 years. I retired from work but got a whole lot busier for some reason. I am now dusting off my equipment in my New Mexico observatory and hop...

Re: 1st Quarter 2015 "Wall of Fame" Contestants

Not fair. Each image was way too good - almost impossible to choose. Excellent work to all three imagers.

Re: June 2014 Astrophotography Contest

Yes, Mike. From my back porch even. The only problem is that I only get to do that 4 or 5 times a year for a week at a time (vacation). But I am going back next week so maybe I'll get some more great skies.

Re: June 2014 Astrophotography Contest

I have been unable to do much astro-imaging lately (solar or deep sky) but found some time to try out a new camera/lens combination and a new iOptron SkyGuider mount. I was at my observatory at Stars End, New Mexico several weeks ago and took this long exposure with a Canon 60Da and a Rokinon 14mm f...

Re: May 2014 Astrophotography Contest

Thanks, Doug. I haven't been to my New Mexico observatory in months and the weather in the Houston area has been pretty poor. I will go to New Mexico at the end of this month and hope to do some deep sky work.

Re: May 2014 Astrophotography Contest

This is a different version of the previous solar image. I cropped it differently to show more of the disk and then blackened the solar disk (in Photoshop) to make the prominences stand out more. A little more dramatic and revealing maybe. Same capture and processing method was used - 80mm Ha solar ...

Re: May 2014 Astrophotography Contest

It's been a while since I posted an image but I caught a very nice solar prominence last weekend and thought I would share it. The photo is cropped to show most of the western limb (north is more or less up). I over-exposed the surface detail a bit to help bring out details and contrast in the proms...

Re: April 2014 Astrophotography Contest

Nice work, Patrick. As Mike said, practice and experiment and you will see improving results. We are all students of astro-imaging and we learn by doing.

Full Solar Disk Mosaic with Scale

It's been a while since I posted but I decided to post a recent full disk mosaic solar shot (Jan 20, 2014) and share something with the group. I often get questions about scale of the sun relative to the earth and other measurements that we can relate to. Recently I found a cool template (Regle Sola...

Re: October 2013 Astrophotography Contest

IC5146 "Cocoon Nebula". First light for my new SBIG STT-8300 Mono CCD! :jumphappy: Well done, Howard. That's very encouraging since I am looking forward to my first serious attempt with my SST8300M in November when I get back to my observatory. If you don't mind, pass on the details of your exposur...

Re: July 2013 Astrophotography Contest

I'll start this one off with another solar image. This time some nice proms on the western limb (north is up). Taken on June 18, 2013 in New Mexico with the Grasshopper USB 3.0 and LS80 DSII solar scope and processed with Autostakkert!2 and Photoshop. Grasshopper3-GS3-U3-28S4M_195051_g3_b3_ap2608_AS...

Re: May 2013 Astrophotography Contest

Thank you. There were several days where the prominences and flares were spectacular. I am lucky I caught this one.
