Re: May 2013 Astrophotography Contest

I haven't been able to do much in the dark skies from south Texas but here is a fortuitous solar shot I caught on May 14 of a flare loop from sunspot AR 11748 on the eastern limb of the disk. Sunspot 11745 is the big one toward the center that shot off some X-class flares last week. The flare loop w...

Re: March 2013 Astrophotography Contest

Shadow,
Thanks. I am out in Missouri City which is a tad better than the Galleria as far as skies go. My ccd cameras are in New Mexico where I have a place. Much nicer skies there but I don't get there very often (4 or 5 times a year).

Re: March 2013 Astrophotography Contest

Doug, It is their latest model - just came out last month. I think I bought one of the first ones. Here is a link - http://grasshopper3.ptgrey.com/USB3/Grasshopper3" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. It is supposedly the best of both worlds - fast frame rate (26 fps) coupled with small ...

Re: March 2013 Astrophotography Contest

Well, I haven't gotten out to my observatory yet so here is another solar shot. A nice little filaprom was available for capture in the SE quadrant of the solar disk. I took it from the Houston, Texas area on March 17 using my LS80 THa DSII solar scope on an iEQ45 mount and with a new camera that I ...

Re: January 2013 Astrophotography Contest

When I am at my observatory, I always use AC power for everything. I don't have trouble with battery power in south Texas. Battery power would not last long at all in the temps I have been experiencing up here. Update - it is actually 46 degrees here now - Unbelieveable! It has not been above 20 for...

Re: January 2013 Astrophotography Contest

Thanks, Mike. I am in New Mexico now and have to return to Texas on Saturday. But the weather has turned around here so I might be able to get in another session or two before I leave - I still have a ways on the learning curve of this camera. A warm front has moved through and it is clear and 29 de...

Re: January 2013 Astrophotography Contest

Here is my 'first light' attempt with my new SBIG STT 8300M with FW8 - the Horsehead (Barnard 33) and Flame (NGC 2024) nebulas taken from Redshift Observatory in southern New Mexico. This is my first monochrome RGB camera and I was on the learning curve throughout this imaging session. The camera ha...

Re: September 2012 Astrophotography Contest

I took this image just about 11:00PM MST last night (Aug 31) at my observatory in New Mexico - processed it this morning. This is my first deep sky attempt in 1-1/2 years and my first serious one with my SBIG 8300C and my AP1200 GTO mount. The scope was a WO 132 f/7 FLT. The sky was clear but very c...

Re: Silliness

Actually, that was pretty sloppily done but all the images are mine. I re-submitted a slightly better version. I need some better skies so I won't spend my time doing this.

Re: July 2012 Astrophotography Contest

Well, my deep sky imaging still is contingent on my being at my observatory in New Mexico. I was there in early July but the monsoon season came in with a bang (not complaining!) and the evenings were cloudy and/or rainy. I did have a few opportunities for solar which is my current entry. It shows a...
