Rare Double Arched Solar Flare

Post by rray6 » Sat Sep 16, 2017 10:35 am

Although I haven't gotten back to deep sky yet (soon), I thought I would share this unusual capture of the sun with you. After a series of flares (including at least four X-Class flares) all last week, the sun gave up this beautiful looping double-arch flare from Sunspot 12673 before passing on to the far side. It did not last too long so I was fortunate to capture it with my Lunt 80mm solar scope and a 2.5x Powermate. The camera was a Point Grey Grasshopper 3. This capture was on Sept 10, 2017 around 11:00 AM MDT. It was a fun week considering we are in the middle of the solar minimum (11 year cycle).

Wow that is super cool. Or hot!

I'm amazed at whats going on with the sun when you guys capture photos of it. I never imagined there was so much interesting detail.

The fun thing about it is that it's never the same twice.
