Skywatcher or Meade

Post by paul16mj » Sat Apr 07, 2018 1:52 pm

Good evening lads,

I have been absent throughout the entire winter.
The thing is realy, When i want to do astronomy outside. I don't want to prepare like half an hour with stuff. and then take it all back inside again.

I cleaned out the shed, and put my scope in there. Alongside my laptop for recording.

I NEED a new mount desperately.

My choices are between these :
- Skywatcher EQ5 http://www.robtics.nl/product_info.php? ... cts_id=440" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
- Meade LX70/EQ5 http://www.robtics.nl/product_info.php? ... ts_id=5886" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; <---- this one has my main attention (because meade ;) )
- Skywatcher HEQ5 http://www.robtics.nl/product_info.php? ... cts_id=444" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I need something that is reasonably quick to set up and not too complicated.

Can anybody give me some advice on this?

Good day

The Meade would be ok if you are just doing visual and need to save a little money. If you want to do astro photography you will need the Skywatcher HEQ5 at a minimum. The goto is a great upgrade over manual control.

You could also find an HEQ6 used for same price as the HEQ5. I just sold one for $1000 in excellent condition. Look in Astromart and Cloudynights for used.

No it is not flawed. The goto in the HEQ5 is a definite upgrade in my opinion. Of the 3 you posted I would go in order of

1) Skywatcher HEQ5
2) Skywatcher EQ5
3) Meade LX70 EQ5

Remember this is only my opinion :20:

Don't cheap out on the mount. Buy the one with the largest carrying capacity even if you don't think you will reach it now. Of all the equipment one buys, the mount is the most important. You want the most stability possible. If you can't afford it now, wait and save up a little more. I too would recommend the HEQ-5.

I gotta jump in. Get the NEQ6 from Sky Watcher. Your only talking about a 100 or so bucks. I bought mine for 1200 and saw one in perfect shape on CN a month ago for 800 bucks.

It's a work horse and will be there for you no matter what you want to do. I have easily loaded mine up with 35 pounds of weight and it tracked fine.

B&H Photo has the on sale all the time. I now have the Losmandy G11 but will never get rid of my NEQ6

Thanks but the NEQ 6 is 1400 euro in the eu.
The HEQ5 is 1000 euro
And the EQ5 is 339 euro

It should be less in euros because a dollar is just a bit less worth.

But since retailers are greedy here

I realy cannot afford this right now. Maybe in 3 years or so

I completely understand. Good luck. Might I suggest that whatever mount you decide on to try to make sure it has a guide port on it. Check Astromart Classifieds and Cloudy Nights Classifieds before you make your final decision. I see great deals all the time there.

I just checked Astromart and there is a nice Atlas Mount which is the same as a NEQ6 for 800 bucks.

Anyway best of luck

Yes and it's a workhorse. You will never be bummed out about it. I have a secondary power supply cable for it if you want it, I can send it to you. The thing just works and always delivers. Good luck and let me know how it turns out.
