First image processed solely in Photoshop

Post by Rudeviewer » Mon Jan 16, 2017 11:47 am

Just playing with old data so the stars suck for roundness but good HA data of the California Nebula. I wanted to get better at processing in photoshop so this is the start. I still haven't got the star and how to keep them from getting dark bands around them a bit hopefully i can get a grasp on when that happensm but here is the first image.

did better with the stars on this one, PS only. I used Chris Gomez's Tutorial on how to sharpen things and also how to create a star mask the second time around. Great tutorial for sure!

Hey! Stop that! You're supposed to be processing in PI! If you start processing great images like this in PS, I may never leave PS! I'm trying to kick the PS habit...PS feels so comfortable to me, like an old shoe. I need to grab PI and begin to master it.

I thought you were only a PI man now.

Hahaha... hey keep me out of it LOL, Photoshp definitely has its place... the masking capabilities are just so much more versatile and easier when it comes to selecting where you want the effects applied but definitely PI has things that PS alone cannot do... Just use the best of both worlds! Zack I really like the sharpness of the North America Nebula great job on that one  glad you were able to follow the tutorial :1:

Thanks Chris. I can tell that i skimped out when doing the background extraction as i see bright corners. I wasn't really concerned about that too much since it was just practice. I will say that i learned a ton about masks this time around. I didn't think to mask a mask, that masks that group that you have already masked lol. I may be using photoshop a bit more now, maybe take it back and forth in between things. The one thing i am curious about is when converting it to a TIFF to go to photoshop, what do i do once i get it back into PI, save it back a an xsif and then back to a TIFF when going to photoshop?

Yup LOL lots of masking. But that's the thing, I don't think that can be done in PixInsight. I usually keep it as a 16bit Tiff. Not sure if you loose any data going from xsif so I tent to do all that I need to do in PixInsight before I move to Photoshop.

Ahh ok. I think now that i see how i do things when using photoshop to stretch levels and curves, i may take a different approach in pixinsight now.

Good stuff Zack. We really do need to understand both. I tried to do a mostly PS process on my Pacman. It was just ok. I did combine the channels with a clipping layer mask. Which was a new skill. I haven't had much luck beyond that. Now that I got my PC rebuilt and it isn't crashing unexpectedly anymore, I will be spending some time reprocessing that data and learning more PS skills. I need to go through Chris's tute step by step and see if the skills sink in.
